Extra Activities

AlphaTykes Language Program

Right now, your child is in the inside of their Golden Age of Learning. The window for your child to acquire a foreign language as quickly as they can now, begins to close at 6 years of age. Native-speaking teachers from AlphaTykes visit Lane Cove Learning Centre every week. They run lessons with each group, 30 minutes for Toddlers and Junior Kindy and 55 minutes for Senior Kindy and PrePrep.

To reinforce and consolidate the children’s learning, Lane Cove staff have the centre children learn their second language everyday. Mainly this is through the songs and games learnt during the lessons, to make sure it’s all fun and ‘play-based’. This means that every child that attends Lane Cove Early Learning Centre is exposed to a second language.

The program runs like a school year with four blocks of 10 week terms. During the lessons the children learn their second language in a fun environment through games, songs and craft.

Letterland – Successfully teaching your child to read and write

Letterland is a unique, phonics based approach to teaching, reading, writing and spelling for 3-8 year olds. Letterland provides a link between letter sounds and letter shapes.

At Lane Cove ELC Early Learning Centre we believe it is essential that our preschool children are given a solid foundation in phonics before moving to primary school. Letterland helps to build this foundation in a unique play based way.

Your preschool child has free access to computers at Lane Cove ELC Early Learning Centre. This well established and successful system will help teach your child

  • to listen and use spoken language
  • explore and experiment with language
  • sustain attentive listening and respond to what they have heard
  • extend their vocabulary and explore the meaning of sounds and new words
  • hear and say initial sounds and words
  • link sounds to letters, name sounds and letters of the alphabet
  • know that print carries meaning and is read from left to right

At Lane Cove Early Learning Centre we like to encourage our staff to utilize their skills and talents that they have in other areas of interest other than the childcare industry, this giving them the opportunity to engage the children in extra curricular activities that they also have a passion in.

Art Classes with Catherine

Our Butterflies’ staff member Catherine is a budding artist who enjoys incorporating her skills and love of art by leading small groups of children of all ages for occasional art classes to develop their skills and interest in a range of different creative drawing and painting experiences and all sorts of other artistic activities.

Cooking with Lesley

Our friendly team member Lesley who works in the Kitchen enjoys spending time in each room on occasions providing the children with hands on cooking experiences and also discuses with the children the importance of healthy eating.

Dancing with Bree

Our Trainee Bree who has a background in sport and dance enjoys incorporating this interest by offering the children structured small group sport and movement classes which helps develop their gross motor and coordination skills and encourages their enjoyment of fitness and exercise.

Animal care with Jenny

Our Butterflies staff member Jenny has a real passion and interest in Animals and enjoys spending time talking with the children about the importance of taking care of animals and has the duty of ensuring the children are taught how to look after the centre’s pets including our loveable bunny ‘Snuggles.’ Jenny also plays a role in organizing visits from RSPCA and other animal groups such as’ Henny Penny Hatching’ experiences for the children throughout the year.
